Introduction to Gentiopicroside |
Gentiopicroside (English name: Gentiopicroside, molecular formula: C₁₆H₂₀O₉, molecular weight: 356.32) is a secoiridoid glycoside compound widely distributed in plants of the Gentianaceae family (such as Gentiana scabra, Gentiana macrophylla, etc.), and it is also the bitter component of plants like Swertia and Chloranthus. It usually appears as white needle-like crystals (or powder, light yellow/red crystals), shows color reactions of lactone glycoside compounds, is easily soluble in solvents such as water, methanol, and ethanol, has strong hydrophilicity, poor lipid solubility, and is prone to discoloration in sunlight. In medicinal plants, it is one of the main active components in the dried roots and rhizomes of Gentiana manshurica Kitag., Gentiana scabra Bunge, Gentiana triflora Pall., or Gentiana rigescens Franch. There are more than 500 species of Gentiana worldwide, with over 230 species distributed in China, mostly produced in the southwestern region, and some can be used as medicine. |
Applications of Gentiopicroside | Treatment of Hepatobiliary Diseases: It has a choleretic effect, promoting bile secretion and gallbladder contraction in rats. It protects against chemical (carbon tetrachloride, TAA, etc.) and immune-induced liver injury, can protect liver cell membranes, inhibit serum transaminase activity, promote liver protein synthesis, and reduce the degree of liver tissue lesions. Clinically, it is used as an adjuvant treatment for acute and chronic cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, biliary tract infections, and other related hepatobiliary diseases. |
Anti-inflammatory and Analgesic Effects: It inhibits inflammatory models such as xylene-induced ear swelling in mice and carrageenan/zymosan A-induced paw swelling in rats; it can increase pain thresholds and alleviate pain caused by thermal and chemical stimuli, and is also effective in acute peritonitis pain and chronic inflammation models (such as rat granuloma). It can be used in the research and development of related anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs or compound preparations (e.g., Zhuyu Xiaotong Capsules, containing Gentiana macrophylla and other herbs with gentiopicroside, for cervical spondylosis pain). | |
Neuroprotection (Parkinson's Disease, etc.): It can target the bile acid receptor TGR5 and activate the Nrf2 antioxidant signaling pathway. In Parkinson's disease mouse models, it improves motor dysfunction (increasing activity distance, prolonging rotarod retention time, etc.), protects dopaminergic neurons, and reduces oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, providing a new direction for research on candidate drugs for Parkinson's disease treatment. |

Others: It also has effects such as stomachic, antihypertensive, and diuretic, and can be used in compound preparations such as Redu Qing Eye Drops (for treating viral keratitis, acute and chronic conjunctivitis) and Longdan Tongqiao Pills (for treating rhinitis) to exert effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, and promoting resuscitation. |
