Ginger is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale, consumed as a delicacy, medicine, or spice. This underground stem has a long cultivation history originating in Asia, now grown in India, Southeast Asia, West Africa, and the Caribbean. While technically root ginger, it's commonly referred to simply as ginger. Traditionally used for abdominal bloating, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, and rheumatism, its most active compounds are the aromatic gingerols. The drying process also produces shogaols.
